Painter 1st Class                    

GC Dry Docking & Rig Repair is currently seeking a Painter 1st Class. 

Duration & Hours: Project will be for 3 months working 6/10's to 7/10's

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.

1. Paint, stain, enamel, or other finishes to equipment, interior or exterior of ships, marina buildings, or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.

2. Prepare wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting by removing old finishes, grease, rust, scale, and dirt by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water or abrasive blasting.

3. Mix and match colors of paint, stain, shellac, calcimine or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies or according to formula and specifications.

4. Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.

5. Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, or sanding machines.

6. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats per specifications.

7. Cut stencils and brush or spray lettering on surfaces.

8. Fill cracks, holes, or joints with caulk, putty, plaster, wood or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.

9. Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.

10. May be required to remove fixtures such, door knobs, lamps, or electric switch covers prior to painting.

Required Education & Experience:

1. High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school preferred.

2. Industrial and/or marine painting experience preferred:

· 1st Class: 3-5 years

· 2nd Class: 1-3 years

Working Conditions:

1. Some climbing (100 feet) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.

2. Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights while wearing fall prevention equipment.

3. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.

4. Aboard ships, both on and offshore as well as confined spaces.

5. Must be able to stand and operate equipment up to four continuous hours.

6. The work requires long periods of sitting in awkward positions, standing on a variety of surfaces and at differing angles, bending over, crouching and climbing up and over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.

Necessary Equipment Operation:

1. Mill gauges, both dry and wet.

2. Profile gauge, both compare and microgauge.

3. Spray guns; HVLP, electrostatic, and aluminizer.

4. Distilling unit.

Special Skills:

1. Willing to learn and become familiar with air permit regulations.

2. Perform basic mathematical functions.

3. Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures.

4. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals.

5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

6. High performance and a strong team player.
