Outside Machinist 1st Class

Location: Port Arthur 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.  

  1. Must be able to understand and perform the disassembly, repair, and reassembly of the following using safe rigging and handling practices: 

  1. Steam Turbines 

  1. Centrifugal Pumps 

  1. Reciprocating and Vertical Pumps 

  1. Gear Boxes 

  1. Marine drive trains 

  1. Align machines and equipment, to specified tolerances with minimal supervision, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers and indicators. 

  1. Lay out, drill, and tap mounting holes, using measuring instruments, 

  1. Level bedplates and establish centerline, using straightedge, levels, and transit. 

  1. Fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified components, using interference fit by means of pressing or portable gas heating equipment and or cryogenics. 

  1. Use precision measuring instruments to make measurements within specified tolerances. 

  1. Write condition reports for each job performed. 

Required Education & Experience: 

  1. High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school preferred.  

  1. Industrial and/or marine equipment repair experience: 

  • 1st Class: 3-5 years  

  • 2nd Class: 1-3 years 

Working Conditions: 

  1. Open-air conditions such as noisy, hot, cold, etc. 

  1. Must wear hearing, eye, and head protection. 

  1. Some climbing (100 feet) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved. 

  1. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials. 

  1. Aboard ships, both on and offshore. 

  1. Some travel required. 

Necessary Equipment Operation: 

  1. Micrometer 

  1. Feeler Gauges 

  1. Hydraulic Power units. 

  1. Rigging 

  1. Power Tools 

  1. Hydraulic jacks and other lifting equipment 

Special Skills: 

  1. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings and technical manuals in order to reassemble and align according to specifications. 

  1. Reasonable knowledge of machinery, bearings, fasteners, seals, mechanical applications and their tolerance requirements. 

  1. Perform basic mathematical functions. 

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 

  1. High performance and a strong team player. 

  1. Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures with minimum supervision.
